FAQs . . . in case you were wondering about something.
The summers in the area are moderate because of the seaside location and the proximity to the cooler waters of the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Here’s what you can expect. Late April to mid-June: 10 to 20 degrees Celsius (50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit). Mid-June to mid-September: 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit). Mid-September to mid-October: 15 – 20 degrees Celsius (60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).
Along with your summer clothes, bring a fleece jacket or sweater, a weatherproof outer jacket, sturdy shoes for hiking, house slippers, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. You can stop in Annapolis Royal en route or after you settle in to pick up anything you might have forgotten. The closest pharmacy is there, along with two medium-sized grocery stores, clothing and general stores. Please bring your toiletries with you. Just in case you leave yours behind, I leave a supply of shampoo/conditioner, soaps and toothpaste in each bathroom. We also provide a pair of binoculars, maps of Nova Scotia, umbrellas and light rain jackets for your use during your stay. For house items used during your visit, please make sure to leave them at the house before you leave. There is a washer and dryer with an initial supply of laundry soap and an iron with board. Please let us know if you need any help with the house, such as with the small appliances or plumbing, so we can address it as soon as possible.
The cottage is designed for longer-term stays. We want guests to feel truly at home without the pressures of seeing and exploring the area within a narrow time frame. With a more extended stay, you can set your own pace, spread out and settle in, take a day off, relax and reset, cook with local ingredients, meet new people, and frequent your favourite coffee shop or restaurant. In short, you'll get to know one area very well and make it another place to call home.
After many years of hosting, we've found that the space is most comfortably enjoyed with fewer guests, as most appreciate more space. Many of our guests often use the extra room for an office or art studio space or as a private place to read or write.
We also need to limit the number of people as the cottage is on a well and septic system, and we have to ensure that the system does not overload.
Yes, the area has excellent cell reception. However, some mobile phones are only compatible with use on some networks. Check with your provider to make sure. Some guests have purchased an unlocked phone and SIM card for use in Canada.
It's fast! The area is serviced by fiber-optic internet with download speeds ranging from 120 to 240 mbps.
We operate on self check-in, which means you can arrive any time after 3 pm without having to worry about people to meet and keys to pick up. Once we receive your final payment, we will email you the entry information. We ask our guests that if at all possible to please give us an approximate time of arrival in case we need to turn on the porch light or turn up the heat.
While the cottage’s 15-acre setting is very private, it is not remote. Located along a rural-residential road, it is a mere five minutes by car to Annapolis Royal, where you’ll find stores, restaurants, and galleries. It’s also a lovely bike ride and walk into town. The location truly offers the best of both worlds.
We’re definitely in the country, which means you may encounter dragonflies, bees or hummingbirds whizzing by, deer or pheasants crossing the road, or a raccoon, skunk or other wild resident meandering through the lawns outside your window. The milkweed and perennial gardens attract both butterflies and bees. Nova Scotia has no poisonous snakes, and it is rare to see even a gardener snake. You’ll likely hear the music of peepers or katydids at dusk and perhaps the hoot of a Barred or Great Horned owl. Nature abounds here. If you prefer a more controlled environment, then Wildflower Cottage may not be the place for you.
There has definitely been an increased in the tick population in the past several years. For our part, we keep the lawns and walking paths mowed weekly and strongly advise guests to avoid the high grasses and low-lying brush. We also keep tick and other insect repellents at the house for your use.
Anywhere from five minutes to an hour and a half. Because of the tidal currents in the Annapolis River-Basin, swimming is absolutely not advised, but there are lots of options:

The bedroom has one twin bed and a full bathroom with washer and dryer next to it. There are 3 steps with a secure railing going up the deck to the front entrance. The back entrance has two steps.
